Prescription vs Emergence

Emergence

There is always some debate about the level of prescription that an organisation should wrap around Social Business software platforms like JiveSBS as they prepare for roll-out.

My views on the subject have changed over the years as I have been involved in various such debates. People don’t like being told what to do. We like to explore, change things around, and make a place our own. Embrace the idea that people will warp and stretch whatever we deliver in ways we can’t predict – they’ll surprise us with their creativity and make something wonderful with what we provide. Lock things down too much and you not only risk low rates of adoption and usability, but you will stifle innovation.

In other words, I suggest it would be best for us to lean towards the principle of minimal control whenever practical.
