Visual Studio and jQuery

It is great that open source software solutions are gaining so much traction across the development and corporate landscape. With the official launch of Visual Studio 2010 and Windows Azure last week, I noted some welcome changes to Microsoft’s direction and support of open source and open standards in web development.

For example, ASP.NET MVC 2 is now built-into VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4, and provides a great way to build web sites and  applications using a model-view-controller based pattern.

One of the biggest announcements is that Microsoft is investing in jQuery as their primary technology for client browser scripting. Part of this includes contributing back to jQuery through the same approval process as any other contributor. Stephen Walther has more details on his blog post, Microsoft, jQuery, and Templating.

I have been a jQuery fan for a while now, and that I support frameworks like this in principal. Anyone attending John Resig’s talk at Webstock in March should be a convert. If not, I encourage you to dip your toes in. For those of you with a bit more jQuery under your belts you may be interested in Elijah Manor’s Six Things Every jQuery Developer Must Know session from MIX.
